    This bespoke series of three online webinars led by Kerry Yates, HIAS MFL Adviser and experienced teacher of languages and head of department, is aimed at primary teachers, who are new to the MFL subject leader role. Covering various aspects of subject leadership from current language teaching pedagogy, curriculum development and quality assurance. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas.

    Primary MFL Conference 2026

    Parlez- vous français?  ¿Hablas español? The power of speaking in primary languages

    Informative presentations, lively discussions and engaging, hands-on activities will ensure that our third annual primary MFL conference provides language leaders with practical ideas, skills and knowledge to facilitate excellent language teaching for young learners.  Whether you are new to the role of language coordinator or a more experienced language teacher, the sessions will offer delegates support and challenge to develop their provision further.

    Kerry Yates, HIAS MFL Adviser and experienced language teacher and curriculum leader will be presenting a variety of sessions based on current best practice. We will consider developing speaking skills for all, target language and culture in MFL amongst other areas. We are really excited to welcome Ellie Chettle Cully, primary languages specialist, teacher, writer and trainer to lead an interactive phonics session!  We also look forward to hearing practical 5 minute language activities from Liz Lord, experienced primary language teacher and languages consultant.  Liz is an active member of the Association of Language Learning and is tirelessly working to promote languages in the region and also nationally.

    The conference will consist of a series of mini masterclass sessions, relevant to those colleagues new to the role, as well as those with more experience. In addition, this is an excellent opportunity to network and share ideas and resources with colleagues throughout the day.

    MFL Primary subject leader network meetings will bring colleagues together to understand and share great practice in developing MFL in primary schools and to facilitate regular and meaningful collaboration. 

    • To provide support for the development of subject knowledge and curricula for MFL primary subject leads and teachers to consider when planning in the short, medium and long term. 

    • To introduce subject colleagues to one another and to begin developing strong and lasting collaboration at county and local level. 

    • To establish a sustainable model for connecting primary and secondary MFL subject leaders, with the aim of establishing an exciting culture of collaboration.
